The Most Valuable Characters
- Rochester: an Englishman who moves to Jamaica to inherit his father's fortune. He is pressured into marrying Antoinette. He is never named throughout the novel.
- Antoinette: This character is based off of the character Bertha from Jane Eyre. She was born to a family of slave owners. Her character is marked by one of alienation and isolation.
- Annette: Antoinette's mother who goes insane when Antoinette is a child after she is ostracized by the other Jamaican women.
- Daniel: Antoinette’s father’s son. He writes the letter to the unnamed Mr. Rochester telling him that Antoinette along with the rest of her family, are mentally insane.
- Christophine: A black servant that works for Antoinette’s mother Annette. She is also alienated because rather than originating from Jamaica, Christophine is actually from an island called Martinique. She is well trusted by Annette and Antoinette, and is known for practicing obeah.
